Human Function and Performance Philosophy

At Human Function and Performance, we don't just treat where it hurts—we identify why it hurts. Every treatment begins with understanding how your body moves so we can address the root cause and create lasting results.

Why Choose Human Function & Performance for Physical Therapy?

You Don't Have to Keep Working Around Your Back Pain

Low back pain can affect everything from sitting and sleeping to working out, running, traveling, or simply getting through your day. While the location of your pain matters, it doesn't always tell the entire story.

At Human Function & Performance, we look beyond the painful area to understand how your hips, pelvis, spine, rib cage, and surrounding movement patterns may be contributing to your symptoms.

Why Does My Back Hurt?

Where You Hurt May Not Be Where the Problem Starts.

The low back doesn't move independently. Your feet, hips, pelvis, spine, and rib cage all contribute to the way forces move through your body.

When mobility or control is limited somewhere within that system, another area may compensate. For some people, the low back becomes the area absorbing that additional stress.

Our Approach to Low Back Pain

We Don't Just Treat the Pain. We Assess the Movement Behind It.

Your evaluation considers:

Hand Dominance Patterns

How your body naturally organizes movement and develops asymmetries.

Movement Layers

Which joints, muscles, fascia, and other systems may be influencing movement.

Three Planes of Motion

How effectively you move forward/backward, side-to-side, and rotationally.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is an evaluation?

Your initial Physical Therapy Evaluation is approximately 60 minutes. This allows us to thoroughly understand your symptoms, evaluate how your body moves, identify the root cause of your condition, and develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your goals.

Do I need a referral?

In most cases, no referral is required to begin Physical Therapy. If your condition requires additional medical evaluation or collaboration with another healthcare provider, we'll guide you through the appropriate next steps.

Do you accept insurance?

Human Function & Performance is a cash-based, out-of-network practice. This allows us to provide one-on-one care, longer appointment times, and personalized treatment plans without many of the restrictions imposed by insurance companies.

We can provide a detailed receipt (superbill) that you may submit to your insurance provider for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

How many visits will I need?

Every individual is different. Your plan of care depends on your condition, goals, activity level, and how your body responds to treatment.

Following your evaluation, we'll discuss our recommendations and create a personalized plan designed to help you recover efficiently while working toward long-term results.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Athletic or workout attire is ideal, and athletic shoes are recommended if movement or walking assessments will be performed.

Can I come without pain?

Absolutely. Physical Therapy isn't only for injuries.

Many people visit us to improve movement quality, prevent future injuries, address mobility limitations, or prepare for specific activities and sports before pain ever develops.

Can athletes benefit?

Absolutely. We work with athletes and active individuals of all levels—from recreational fitness enthusiasts to competitive athletes.

Our approach focuses on optimizing movement, improving performance, reducing injury risk, and helping you return to your sport stronger and more confident.

What makes Human Function & Performance different?

At Human Function & Performance, we don't just treat where it hurts—we identify why it hurts. Every evaluation begins with understanding how your body moves, functions, and performs so we can address the underlying cause of your symptoms rather than simply treating them. Our goal is to help you move better, function better, perform better, and stay active for the long term.
